How to write a blog post that ranks on Google
Pick one question your customers actually search for, look at what already ranks, then write the clearest and most useful answer on the web, with the direct answer near the top. Use plain headings that match the follow-up questions, add your own experience and examples, and link to it from related pages on your site.
Why it matters
A good article keeps bringing visitors for months or years after you write it, without paying per click. For a small business, a handful of articles that answer real buying questions ('how much does a visa for X cost', 'what to pack for a desert safari') can bring steady, high-intent traffic.
Google's guidance is consistent: it wants content made for people, written by someone who knows the subject, that leaves the reader satisfied. That favours small businesses with real experience over generic articles written to fill a keyword list.
AI search tools also quote pages that answer a question directly and clearly. A short, direct answer near the top of the page makes your article easier to quote and to rank.
How to do it by hand
Choose a question people really ask
Start from what customers ask you by phone, WhatsApp and email. Type the question into Google and note the autocomplete suggestions and the 'People also ask' box. Pick one specific question per article.
Study what already ranks
Open the top five results. Note what they cover, what they miss, and whether they're guides, lists or product pages. Your article has to be more useful, more specific or more current than those, not just longer.
Write a brief before writing
Decide the title, the one-sentence answer, the headings (each one a follow-up question), the examples you'll use, and the page on your site the reader should go to next.
Answer first, then explain
Put a direct two or three sentence answer under the title. Then go deeper: steps, prices or ranges, local details, photos you took, mistakes you've seen. Short paragraphs and plain words.
Do the on-page basics
A title under about 60 characters that contains the question, a meta description under about 155 characters, one H1, descriptive H2s, alt text on images, and a few links to related pages on your own site.
Publish, link and update
Link to the article from your most relevant service pages and share it once on social. Check Google Search Console after a few weeks for the queries it shows up for, then improve the article to answer them.
How to do it in Wirk
- Automate → Workflows → SEO blog article: fill in the topic or keyword and the length.
- Review the draft: SEO title, meta description, H2 and H3 headings, an FAQ and its FAQPage schema. It's saved as a draft.
- Connect WordPress under Integrations → Social accounts → Add a network → WordPress (with an application password).
- On the article, click Publish… and under On WordPress choose Publish it or Save it as a draft there.
Optional: Planner → Feeds → Add a feed with your blog's RSS turns each new article into a social post that waits in Approvals.

Common mistakes
Writing for a keyword, not a person
Repeating the keyword and padding the word count makes the article worse. Answer the question fully, in your own words, and stop.
Burying the answer
Three paragraphs of introduction before the answer sends readers back to the search results. Answer in the first lines, then explain.
Publishing many thin articles
Dozens of near-identical articles on small keyword variations can hurt the whole site. One thorough page per real question is better.
Never updating
Prices, rules and dates change. An article on visas or fees that's a year out of date loses trust and rankings. Put a review date in your calendar.
Questions and answers
How long should a blog post be to rank?
There's no fixed length. It should be as long as it takes to answer the question well. Many strong how-to articles land between 800 and 2,000 words, but a short, precise answer can beat a long, padded one.
How long does it take for a new article to rank?
It varies a lot with the competition and your site's history. New pages often take weeks to a few months to settle. Check Search Console for the queries it starts to appear for and improve it from there.
Can I use AI to write blog posts?
Google's guidance is that how content is made matters less than whether it's helpful and accurate. Use AI to draft and structure, then add your own experience, check every fact and edit it so it sounds like you.
How many articles should a small business publish?
Quality beats quantity. One or two genuinely useful articles a month, each answering a real customer question, is a good pace for most small businesses.
